Ethics of Fasting: Episode 2
The second category of ethics of fasting is termed “ recommended”. The advised ethics have different forms:
1. Having Suhoor is among the favoured actions for fasting. Several Ahadith have been narrated regarding this. As Prophet Muhammad ( P.B.U.H) said: “ Have Suhoor since there is Barakah in Suhoor ”. In another Hadith, it is narrated: "Our fasts are distinct from the fasts of the bearer of books because of Suhoor". However, people consider having Suhoor a routine and do not make an intention in it. If they obey the words of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), then Suhoor will also mould into a form of worship (Ibaad'ah) and hence there will be a reward for it. The intention must be formed within the heart since making an intention from the tongue is an innovation in the Deen (Bidda'ah). It is more favourable to delay Suhoor until the last hour, implying that as long as dawn is not suspected, Suhoor must be continued.
2. The one who fasts must bear in mind that Allah, the lord of all and the Highest, in the form of Ramadan, has sent upon him a great blessing, and made fasting easy. Many people, before the arrival of Ramadan, either passed away or because of an excuse or wrong guidance, were not able to keep fast. Hence, the man who fasts must realise this blessing, do the Tasbih of Allah, thank Allah for His blessing of treasured moments and help him fast.
